[edit] Playing a Friendly Match, a World Opponent, a Tournament or a Grand Championship:

There are several ways to challenge opponents.

The first (and more friendly) way is to go to Challenges under the Play menu tab. From there, you can select to play in a friendly match. The second (and more competitive) way is to select an opponent under the World menu tab. Lastly, the third and most challenging method is to sign up for a tournament under the Tournaments tab under the Play menu.

During any game, action is shown on the mini field to the right. You can watch as your team moves up and down the pitch, advancing and countering the opposition. To the left, the highlights tab displays the goals and relevant plays. Clicking on the Squads tab gives you an immediate run down of how your team compares to theirs.

After any game, a display advertises whether you should glory in Victory! or lament the Defeat! of your team. Scores are immediately applied to your teams attributes and experience distributed to team members. It should be noted that Tournaments offer much greater rewards than a regular Match; if you're looking to boost any one of your Team Attributes, it is worth the wait to compete in one. Also shown are important news regarding your team's experience gains:

  • If your opposition was offline, you receive 50% less experience.
  • If the opposite team was too weak relative to your own, you also receive proportionately less experience.
  • If your teams have been playing in too many games for the day and are running on low fitness reserves, they are likewise affected.

In the upper left corner of the Kick-Off frame, you can always click to view the game you are currently participating in. This is a good way to view your progress in case you navigate away from the Live! game view.

[edit] Play A Friendly Match

Friendly Matches are between your team and another on your friends list. To the right of each team, you will see Play or Challenge.

Play: This is an option if that team is offline. Playing against an offline team yields only half the experience for your teammates.
Challenge: This is an option if that team is online. Challenges must be accepted by the opposite team, but both teams receive the full benefit of a game (i.e. full experience distributed to team mates).

Some teams may be grayed out; this means that they are currently unavailable and likely playing another Match or Tournament. You can choose anyone from the list but be warned! While your team may gain more experience from a stronger, friendlier opponent, some of these teams may vastly outclass your own and you might be on the receiving end of a good thrashing! Conversely, picking on a friend that has a weaker team will likewise yield a smaller amount of experience.

Clicking the Play with Anyone button picks a random opponent within your world rankings bracket for you to play against. While it is a quick way to get started, it is also likely to offer the least rewards for your time.

For Gate Income of a Friendly Match, the team with the smaller Fan Club Score is taken and multiplied by the gate cost (base $10). The resulting cash value is split evenly between the two teams.

Regardless of whom you play against, the scores for winning a Match is three points for a win, two points for a draw and one point for a loss. After you finish a match, you can view a Replay of the game on your History Page.

[edit] Challenging a World Opponent

You can view your ranking among the world teams by clicking the World green menu tab. You can select an opponent based on their relative Score, Strength or Fan Club to you. These events play much like a Friendly Match, but are immediately easier or more challenging based upon your personal preference.

Since your Fan Club is immediately affected by what sort of opponent you play, you can, for example, select an opponent whose score closely matches your own but has a significantly higher Fan Club. This way, you can safely increase your Fan Club rating while playing a challenging opponent.

Scoring is exactly like that of a Friendly Match, three points for a win, two points for a draw and one point for a loss. Gate Income is also similar to a Friendly Match. Again, after you finish a match, you can view a Replay of the game on your History Page.

[edit] Play in a Tournament

Tournaments are between you and a random assortment of other teams. Tournaments have a minimum and maximum requirement score before you can participate:

Small Cup: any score in order to participate.
Crystal Cup: Maximum Score of 100 in order to participate.
Bronze Cup: Any Score between 101-250 in order to participate.
Silver Cup: Any Score between 250-500 in order to participate.
Gold Cup: Minimum Score of 501-1000 in order to participate.
Platinum Cup: 1001-2000 in order to participate
Emerald Cup: 2001-5000 in order to participate
Sapphire Cup: Over 5000 in order to participate
Future Tournaments may have even higher Score requirements. Stay tuned!

When viewing the tournament listings, four random teams will be listed next to each. To get a better idea of your competition, you can click on the "show all" button below the fourth team listed. This lists all the participating teams and can help you size up your chances of winning. You can also see previous champions by going to the Tournament History Page.

Tournament matches are built to accommodate sixteen players. Future tournaments may modify the number of participants, but this is far in the future. These games are played in a "knockout" format, meaning the first sixteen teams are paired off and play a game against each other. The eight victors from these are then paired off to compete again, then the next four from that, and so on, until only one team reigns supreme!

Playing in a tournament yields far greater rewards than a friendly Match. All points gained are doubled, meaning you gain six points for a win, four for a draw and two for a loss-- Winners of a tournament will gain a whopping 24 points to their score! Secondly, regardless of whether a player is on or offline, all teammates receive full experience points.

Gate Income for a Tournament Match is calculated by the sum of the two competing Fan Club scores and multiplied by a certain factor dependent on the tournament stage. Income is split evenly between the two competing teams.

Anytime before the Tournament begins, you may leave the game by clicking the Leave button. At any time during, you may also view your progress in the ladder by going to the Tournament History Page.

[edit] Championships

Championships are to Tournaments as Tournaments are to Matches-- i.e. they are the game to play in for ultimate bragging rights in Kick-Off!

The Championship is a continuous tournament running as long as the game exists. The Championship is played over many seasons, one calendar month each. All teams with at least 50 points and valid tactical settings (i.e. ranked) qualify. Newly qualifying teams get included in the Championship after each round.

Participants form groups, 10 teams each, and groups form a hierarchy of divisions. This system has a pyramid shape: in the top division there is just one group (A-1), with each division group following increasing the previous number by a factor of three.

For example, the Second Division, the next down from the A-1 group, consists of three more groups (B-1, B-2 and B-3). In the third division there are nine groups (C-1 through C-9), and so on.

There are as many groups and divisions needed in order to accommodate all eligible teams.

In each group all participants meet each other twice, at home and away, so that each team plays a total of 18 matches. One match is played per day, on Monday through Friday; top group matches start at 17:00 UTC, with each next group starting a minute later.

Teams get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss. In the case of a tie, the team with more victories takes precedence. In the case of another push, they are then compared by their allowed goals. If they standoff again, the number-of-goals-scored sets the precedence. Finally, if they are truly caught in a stalemate, a random factor decides which team finishes higher.

The team in the first place gets promoted to the higher division if there is one; the teams taking the three last places get relegated to the lower division if there is one. Promotion and relegation applies to the next season.

The Gate Income from a Championship is similar to a regular tournament, but with a much higher multiplier.

Players receive a 5x (i.e. +400%) bonus to the experience points gained in a Championship tournament match, subject to the opponent's strength penalty as usual.

Health (Stamina) of players will be restored once Round 18 of the Championship is over. After which, the race to the top begins anew!

[edit] Spectators

For every game you play, you will notice the Spectators available in a match. This is the default stadium size and represents the maximum number of seating available to the fans paying to see their favored teams. At the moment this serves little purpose. In future versions of Kick-Off this number may increase or decrease depending on the rank of your team as well as affect Gate Income.

[edit] The Plays of the Game:

Finally, here is a table showing the possible plays that will be performed by your players during a game:
