[edit] The Knighthood Calculator - Version 3.0.x (KC)

The Knighthood Calculator, or KC for short, is an Excel spreadsheet that enables you to play 'what-if' scenarios with various allocations of vassals, build and upgrade levels, and see their effect on your attack and defense capabilities.

The Knighthood Calculator was developed by Mike Heffernan, who is now no longer active as a Knighthood Player, and is maintained and updated by David Loring. Many thanks to Mike for his excellent work in bringing this tool to us. I only hope I am worthy of maintaining it as well. David.

The equations in use in the Knighthood Calculator are described on the main Wiki page, Combat Equations

If anyone has (reasonable!) suggestions for enhancements, or finds an error, I would be pleased to hear from you. Contact me on my lord wall:Viscount David

[edit] Downloading

The Knighthood Calculator 3.0.x This is the download link for the new BETA version of the calculator. This adds War Mode to building production in the squirrel planner, but it is not complete yet.

The Knighthood Calculator 2.0.5 This is the download link for the release version of the calculator. This version is still available but will not be updated further.

If you don't run Microsoft Excel, you can download the viewer from Microsoft here: MS Excel Viewer. You can't edit the spreadsheet, but you can get the gist of how things work.

Alternatively, you can download Open Office, which supports Excel format.

If you just need to be able to use the spreadsheet and don't want Open Office, and don't have MS Excel, you can download KH Calc Wrapper which will allow you to use the spreadsheet without Microsoft Excel or Open Office, and this permits edits as well. You still need to download the KnighthoodCalcs.zip, and please note that the KH Calc Wrapper can only use the .xls version.

[edit] Release News

The next release version of the calculator (v3.0) is available as a Beta. This is a major upgrade to include the effects of Freemen on defence (defense), attack and building production. Bear with me for a while as this is VERY complex, but I just wanted to let you all know what is on it's way. If you would like to test this version before release, please put a message on my Lord wall Lord ID, but I would appreciate it if you have a good understanding of Excel so you can accurately report any errors. Thanks.

If this makes perfect sense please apply now!! =ROUNDDOWN((SUM(CastleVassalPower)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman1,Freemen,3,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman2,Freemen,3,FALSE))+((SUM(CastleVassalPower)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman1,Freemen,3,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman2,Freemen,3,FALSE))*CastleUpgradeLevel*LevelsPercentage)+IF(CastleFreeman1>"<None>",IF(CastleFreeman1<>"Major Domo",VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman1,Freemen,2,FALSE),(SUM(CastleVassalPower)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman1,Freemen,3,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman2,Freemen,3,FALSE))*VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman1,Freemen,2,FALSE)),0)+IF(CastleFreeman2>"<None>",IF(CastleFreeman2<>"Major Domo",VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman2,Freemen,2,FALSE),(SUM(CastleVassalPower)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman1,Freemen,3,FALSE)+VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman2,Freemen,3,FALSE))*VLOOKUP(CastleFreeman2,Freemen,2,FALSE)),0),0)

[edit] Overview

To make it more straightforward in learning how to use the KC and what all the numbers mean, you will notice a number of red triangles in the upper right corner of many of the cells. If you move your mouse over that cell an note will pop up to offer a short description of what that section / column / cell represents.

Input areas, where you enter the specifics of your own game scenario, are all surrounded by a dashed line, and all input areas have a tag to describe what you should enter.

The Knighthood calculator is divided into to tabs that you can switch between to test various scenarios or elements of the game. These sections include:

  • Basic - Where you can model your attack bracket and a specific attack against your defences or a hypothetical defender.

the attack, and how likely you are to be trapped.

  • Squirrel Planner - Where you can model how long it will take you to build / upgrade buildings or produce gold.
  • Fair Ransom - A sheet that enables you to consider various critiera in setting a ransom price.
  • Building Production - Which allows you to calculate the output potential of any buildig in the realm.

There is a fourth tab, Reference Data, which should be considered read-only, and is used to feed data into the other three sheets.

There is a fifth tab, Parameters. Many of the equations now use parameters which enable fast updates to the calculator without having to download a new version. I am hoping to parameterise as much as possible of the spreadsheet over a period of time.

[edit] Basic Tab

The Basic Tab is divided into four major areas:

  • Attack Strength (Teal) - this is where you model your attack bracket and possible actual attack configurations.
  • Defence Strength (Orange) - this is where you model your defences, and see how you stack up against your own attack bracket.
  • Defender (Rust) - this is where you model a possible target for attack, and see how your actual attack would work against them.
  • Options (Olive) - this is where you set options relating to using the Church and Tower in attack or defence.

[edit] Attack Strength (Teal)

In this section, you model your attack strength, both theoretical (which determines your attack bracket) and actual (what you'll actually be attacking with).

  • The first column, Top, is where you enter in the vassals that define your Theoretical Attack Strength (TAS). It determines your attack bracket is - who you can attack and who can attack you. Enter in your highest powered vassals' power levels in the first dotted section. You should enter in as many vassals as the size of your Army.
  • The second column, Attackers, is where you enter in the vassals that you actually want to attack with. If you want to raid with lower powered attackers, for example, then enter their power levels in this column.
  • The final column, Church, is where you enter in the one-time bonus available from the Church that your actual attackers have.
  • Below the columns is an box where you enter the Upgrade level of your Garrison.

Once you have entered that data, you will see three numbers in the Upgraded Attack section. They represent, left to right, your Theoretical Attack Strength, Actual Attack Strength (without Church) and Church bonus total.

[edit] Defence Strength (Orange)

In this section, you model your defences - which vassals are on what positions - and the upgrades of those defences. Once that is keyed in, it will tell you how well defended you are against others in your attack bracket.

The top section is similar to the Attack strength entry - key in the power levels (or health if you like) of the vassals in these positions and the the upgrade levels of those positions below.

There are a number of subsequent sections that tell you how your defences will hold up against various scenarios.

  • Defence Against Raid - this is the DARS from the equations mentioned above. It tells you how many points of defence you have against someone raiding that position.
  • Defence Against Raid % - this compares your DARS to your attack bracket. If you are over 100%, you will withstand an first raid. With each raid, your defenders take damage, so it is a good idea to keep this reasonably high. 150% is considered a working minimum for lower level play.
  • Defence Against Rescue - this tells you how many points of defence you have against a rescue attempt. The bracket doesn't matter here, since people often recruit help for rescues, so there is no percentage section. If you have "Y" entered in the options section for Target Vassal in Tower then the target vassal's normal defence contribution is doubled.
  • Defence Against Seizure - this tells you how many points of defence you have against a seizure attempt. The bracket matters here, since only people in your bracket can attack for seizure, so there is a percentage section below. If you have "Y" entered in the options section for Target Vassal in Tower then the target vassal's normal defence contribution is doubled.
  • Advanced Defence - this section enables you to enter the vassals in your Guardhouse, Blockhouse and Trapper, as well as the upgrade levels of the building.
  • Defence Against XXX (including Blockhouse) - if you have assigned the vassals in your Blockhouse to defend the target vassal, these sections tell you the power of your defence against that specific vassal being rescued or seized.

[edit] Defender (Rust)

The Defender section is where you estimate the strength and distribution of an opponent's forces. You can't know for sure where the enemy has put their forces, but there are techniques you can use to get pretty close. *Hint: How much damage did you take when raiding?*

This section bears a striking resemblance to the orange Defence Strength section, but it has a few subtle differences:

  • First, the vassals and upgrades you are entering are those of your opponent, and they are estimates. Handy though, because you don't need to disturb your own defence configuration to model the enemy.
  • Second, the percentage calculations are compared to your Actual Attack Strength from the teal area, not your theoretical strength. You're comparing your planned attack, not a theoretical one.
  • Third, if you put "Y" in the options to use the Church bonus, that will be factored into how the attack will turn out.

In addition, estimations for Rebellion and Conquering are included at the bottom.

[edit] Options (Olive)

The fourth section is where you can set options regarding the use of the Tower and the Church.

[edit] Current Version and Version History

[edit] Version 3.0.2(beta)

Released Jan 27, 2009

This has War/Peace mode for the squirrel planner and a few other bits, but is work in progress!

Many thanks to Knight Ronald for the suggestion of checkboxes by the buildings so you can note what you are currently working on. Great idea and now incorporated into this version.

3.0 and 3.0.1 were not released.

[edit] Version 2.0.5

Released Jan 02, 2009

Thanks to Knight Georgi for pointing out a small typo that affected the squirrel planner.

Work is proceeding on version 3.0 which will include calcs for Freemen, but it is a very laborious process. Hopefully it will not be too much longer now. I regret that the Battle Simulator will not be returning - there are just too many variables to take into account, many of which are just pure guesswork, which makes it pointless as a tool to depend on.

Wishing all you good folks a very HAPPY NEW YEAR and good play in 2009.

[edit] Version 2.0.4

Released Oct 21, 2008

Thanks to Viscount Tuomas for pointing out that the defender calcs on the basic tab for seize were wrong. The calculations were still the original ones as at the date I inherited the spreadsheet and I had not noticed. These have now been corrected.

[edit] Version 2.0.3

Released Aug 20, 2008

Thanks to Baron Piers for pointing out an omission in the building section of the spreadsheet. The weapon shops only showed the power of the building and omitted to show the output. This has now been corrected.

[edit] Version 2.0.2

Released Jul 25, 2008

As there is some doubt and confusion as to whether the upgrades to Garrison are included in AAS or not I have made this a parameter that you can turn or off depending on your view on this. I have also defaulted Mobilisation alert to not be included for rescues, but again this is a parameter that you can change.

[edit] Version 2.0.1

Released Jul 09,2008

Fixed reported protected cell on main page for Blockhouse Upgrade level. Added note to remind people to set Tower upgrades in Options area for gold calculator to work correctly.

[edit] Version 2.0

Released Jul 09, 2008

The attack and defence sections have all been updated to reflect the new alert system and some corrections have been made to the Tower calculations. A protected gold value is also included. A new page for building production has been added and here you can calculate the output for any building in the realm. The new buildings have been added to the squirrel cages page.

All pages in the calculator have been protected from modification so you do not accidentally damage one of the formulae, however you can unprotect any page, and make modifications if you wisk. The password for all pages is 'knighthood'.

The Battle Simulator has temporarily been removed as it is not functioning satisfactorily under the new rules and gameplay, however I hope to have it back in the calculator again shortly.

[edit] Version 1.5

Release on Feb 14 2008.

Happy Valentines Day. I have added a Fair Ransom calculator to the Knighthood Calculator, which can be used to apply various criteria to come up with a 'fair ransom' price to pay or be paid for a vassal. The criteria are entirely dependent on what the vassal means to you - so two different people will come up with completely different numbers.

[edit] Version 1.4 a-d

Release on Feb 11-12 2008.

Various bug fixes:

  • There was a rounding error on the day estimate in the Squirrel Planner, which could, from time to time, add an extra day. Fixed.
  • There was a bug in Excel's methods for converting complex formulas from English to Finnish. I've re-issued the sheet so it should work everywhere now.
  • The Battle Simulator was not applying the Alert Multiplier correctly for Defence against Seizure. Fixed.
  • The Squirrel Planner talble lookup for build / upgrade cost was reaching one position higher than it should have. Fixed.
  • If you had current build / upgrade values of 0, 1 or blank, it went wonky. Now goes to the first expansion or upgrade when 0, 1 or blank is entered.

[edit] Version 1.4

Released on Feb 11 2008.

  • Added a new "Squirrel Planner" which enables modeling of build and upgrade times based on production of your Castle, Workshop and Marketplace as well as lump sum treasury / external investments.
  • Bug fixed in calculation of Defence Against Raid - rounding problem which caused numbers to be off by a point from time to time.
  • Fixed Battle Simulator to use a vassal's power, not health in defence calculations.

[edit] Version 1.31

Released on Feb 3 2008.

  • Emergency bug / misunderstanding fixed in Trapper simulation. Trapper must beat the entire attacking force.

[edit] Version 1.3

Released on Feb 3 2008.

  • Added a Battle Simulator that will approximate attack results under various conditions for 30 attacks.
  • Added support for Conquer and Rebellion calculations.
  • Added support for the Guardhouse and Blockhouse.

[edit] Version 1.2

Released on Jan 27 2008.

  • Expanded Defender input to allow individual vassal entry.
  • Added Rescue calculations to both the Defence and Defender areas.
  • Added Church bonus optional calculations into the actual attack factor used in the Defender area.
  • Added Tower optional defence bonus into the calculations for Defence and Defender areas.

[edit] Version 1.1

Released on Jan 25 2008.

  • Input fields now more clearly shown.
  • Comments on key cells now in the all input cells and important output cells.

[edit] Version 1.0

Released on Jan 23 2008.

  • Basic Calculations only.

[edit] Wish List

  • Payroll / Vassal Management system for leiges who take on vassals 'under contract.' under consideration
  • Add a Red Light/Green light to the Trapper where if the Power of the Vassals in the Trapper is greater than the your Attack power, it is in success territory.
  • Add Weapons Bonus to attack strength.
